Bio - Mark Willems

I'm an Australian artist working primarily in oil on canvas and watercolour. My work is deeply inspired by the natural beauty of Australia—particularly the rich biodiversity of North Queensland, the Daintree Rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Time spent living in Arnhem Land also gave me a deep appreciation for Indigenous culture, which continues to influence my artistic perspective.

Though I enjoy working in all mediums, I’m most at home with oils and watercolours.

My technique is intuitive and unconventional, often blending traditional forms with a more expressive, personal style.

Experience
My passion for art began at the age of five and has remained a constant throughout my life. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and have exhibited across Australia and in New York. My pieces have found homes with collectors around the world, including in Japan, the USA, and Europe.

Inspiration
Painting is how I connect with the land and share the emotional depth I find in Australia’s landscapes. From the soulful traditions of the Yolngu people to the wild beauty of the reef and rainforest, I paint to express both gratitude and awe. Growing up in country Victoria and now living in Cairns, I feel lucky to be surrounded by the very scenes that continue to inspire my work.
